An ice sculpture depicting The New York quarter, named the Gateway to Freedom quarter for the slogan on the back of the coin, was unveiled on Wednesday January 17, 2001. Governor George E. Pataki asked New Yorkers to submit proposals for the quarter design in 2000. Design theme suggestions included West Point, Frank Sinatra, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, John Lennon and the I Love New York logo, but the winning theme commemorates New YorkÕs history as an entry point for millions of immigrants from around the world..
